๐ŸŸข LONG AUD/CAD โ€” conviction โ—โ—โ—‹ ยท conditions โœ…โœ…โœ…โŒ 3/4 ยท 5d ยท trade #10

Entry 0.99680 ยท target 1.00750 ยท stop 0.98980 ยท reward 1.5ร— risk ยท spot 0.99683

This is the widest live policy-path gap I can express without touching the dollar: Bullock said risks to inflation are tilted higher and markets now price a 95% chance of an RBA hike at the next meeting from 4.35%, while the BoC sits at 2.25% with CPI at 2.315% and falling and September core measures forecast at 1.9-2.0%. I prefer this to the obvious USD/CAD long because the dollar leg is extended โ€” DXY at 96% of its 20-day range with the 10Y down 1.18% today and headlines already noting easing US yields pressuring the greenback โ€” whereas the AUD leg has its own fuel in copper, +2.53% over five days. The commodity terms of trade have flipped in AUD's favour: oil is heading for a weekly loss as Saudi export fears ease, with Brent -1.35% on the day. Structure agrees, price at 0.9968 sits at 81% of the 20-day range with the 13-16 September lows near 0.9894 as the shelf my stop sits behind. Invalidation: a Brent rebound on renewed Saudi supply risk, or any sign the September RBA hike is being priced out; CAD specs are net short -70,499 (-21.1% of open interest) and covered 37,644 last week, so a squeeze is the live risk.

๐Ÿ”ด SHORT GBP/AUD โ€” conviction โ—โ—โ—‹ ยท conditions โœ…โœ…โœ…โŒ 3/4 ยท 5d ยท trade #11

Entry 1.87550 ยท target 1.85750 ยท stop 1.88750 ยท reward 1.5ร— risk ยท spot 1.87547

The MPC held Bank Rate at 3.75% on a 3-0-6 vote and spent the meeting overhauling gilt sales rather than moving rates, a QT tweak read as easing gilt-market pressure, while labour data softened with claimant count forecast +8.3K after -11.0K and earnings decelerating to 3.9%. Against that, the RBA is being priced at a 95% chance of a hike from an already-high 4.35% and the Australian dollar was explicitly lifted by RBA hawks while the kiwi lagged, which tells me this is a rates story rather than a dollar story. I take this over GBP/USD short because I already carry a dollar-long via the open EUR/USD short and the dollar is stretched at 96% of its 20-day range. Structure is the cleanest in the board: 1.8755 is at 6% of the 20-day range and below the 60-day low of 1.8733, with 1.8880 the 16 September high that my stop sits above. Invalidation: the hawkish UK tail โ€” CPI forecast at 3.1% from 2.9% and commentary already asking whether November is a hold โ€” plus GBP specs at -58,836, -18.5% of open interest, which is crowded enough to squeeze.

Risk sentiment

๐ŸŸข Risk-on (clear). Helps AUD, CAD; hurts JPY, CHF.

VIX 15.44, -12.82% on the day and -13.45% over five days, at 32% of its 20-day range, with the S&P 500 +1.14% to 7638. AUD/JPY, the risk barometer, is +1.27% to 111.99 and Japanese equities surged on the BOJ hike as the yen sank. Gold is flat on the day and -3.44% over twenty days at 29% of its range, so there is no haven bid underneath.

Commodities

CommodityDirectionHelpsHurtsNote
oilโšช FLATEUR, JPYCADWTI 100.85, -1.04% on the day and +0.80% over five, Brent -1.35% and -1.16% over five, although WTI is still +14.82% over twenty days. The news is now one-way: prices head for a weekly loss as Saudi export fears ease and more crude is expected to reach market. The twenty-day uptrend has stalled.
gold๐Ÿ”ด DOWNUSDCHF, AUDGold 4414.0, +0.33% on the day but +0.12% over five and -3.44% over twenty, sitting at 29% of its 20-day range. Consistent with the risk-on tape and no haven demand.
copper๐ŸŸข UPAUDโ€”Copper 6.633, +0.71% on the day, +2.53% over five days and +2.68% over twenty, at 67% of its 20-day range. This is a genuine tailwind for AUD and it is now aligned with the hawkish RBA repricing.
iron oreโšช FLATโ€”โ€”No price feed. The news is about cost and pricing friction rather than demand: replacement tonnes are getting costlier amid friction over pricing, and Glencore is entangled in a $2bn battle with trader Radiant. Neutral for AUD; the commodity support today is coming from copper, not ore.
natural gas๐ŸŸข UPUSD, CADEUR, GBP, JPYUS natural gas 2.864, -1.28% on the day but +1.17% over five and +4.79% over twenty. Energy costs remain an input-price problem for the European importers, which is part of why the ECB debate is about hikes rather than cuts.

USD/JPY went from 156.17 to 157.33 inside four hours and the funding-currency trade is back on.
๐Ÿ”ฅ largeAUDRBA's Bullock says risks to inflation are tilted higher; markets price a 95% chance of a September hikeAUD up โ†’ AUD/CAD up, GBP/AUD downThis moves the RBA path from leaning to near-certain and it was the Australian dollar, not the kiwi, that rallied โ€” a rates repricing rather than a dollar move.

Closing note

The book is now long AUD twice and short CHF, CAD and GBP, which is a coherent expression of the two conviction-3 views but concentrated in one currency: if the 95% RBA hike pricing is walked back, AUD/CAD, GBP/AUD and the open AUD/CHF all move against us together. Watch Lagarde at 10:30Z for the only scheduled event left; a hawkish October signal would hurt the EUR/USD short and the EUR crosses. I am also watching whether the post-BOJ yen slide carries USD/JPY from 157.18 toward the 160 intervention zone, because that is where structure loses to policy risk, and whether Brent stabilises above 105 on renewed Saudi supply fears, which would take the commodity leg out of the CAD short. The trade record is 0 of 6, and the pattern is stops too close to entry rather than wrong direction, so both stops today sit a full ATR or more behind a named level.
