The Australian dollar carries the only clearly non-easing path on the board besides Japan's: the cash rate has been at 4.35% for two straight months, CPI was forecast at 4.1%, and Bendigo expects the RBA to hold through both November and December, while the Swiss 3M interbank rate is -0.045% and the SNB vice chairman paired rising inflation pressure with a lower-for-longer hint. The obvious alternative is AUD/CAD, where the differential is wider, but today's Canadian Employment Change at 12:30Z makes that a coin flip on one print and I am already short CAD through trade #30. Copper is up 2.48% over five days and AUD leads the five-day basket at +0.83%, so the Australian side has both the commodity and the momentum. Invalidation is the franc's France bid โ€” ministers pressing Paris on the 2027 budget, protests spreading, euro-area yields elevated โ€” or iron ore's multi-month low dragging the China trade the other way; a daily close below 0.5777 says the market disagrees. Sized as a lean: only one of four conditions is clean and my conviction-2 book is 15% with -591 pips.

Risk sentiment

๐ŸŸข Risk-on (mild). Helps AUD, CAD; hurts JPY, USD.

VIX at 15.41 sits at 27% of its 20-day range and is down 13.62% over twenty days; the S&P 500 at 7765 is at 76% of its range despite a 0.47% down day, and AUD/JPY is +0.95% over five days at 110.444. Copper +2.48% over five days and the removal of the Iran war premium after Trump ruled out an attack before the midterms are the risk-positive inputs. Gold's 1.64% gain is yield- and dollar-driven rather than fear-driven, with wires tying it explicitly to Treasury yields easing from 24-year highs.

Commodities

CommodityDirectionHelpsHurtsNote
oil๐Ÿ”ด DOWNJPY, EUR, CHFCADWTI at 90.25 is down 1.36% on the day and 9.80% over twenty days, sitting at 17% of its range, after Trump said there would be no Iran attack before the midterms; Brent at 102.83 fell 1.39%. The offsets are real but smaller: Iran attacking tankers, a hurricane threatening US supply and US sanctions on 17 shadow-fleet vessels.
gold๐ŸŸข UPAUD, CHFUSDGold rose 1.64% to 4225.3 as Treasury yields retreated from 24-year highs and the dollar paused, though it remains 4.16% lower over twenty days at 38% of its range.
copper๐ŸŸข UPAUD, CADโ€”Copper at 6.653 is up 2.06% on the day, 2.48% over five days and 2.84% over twenty, at 68% of its range, which is the strongest China-linked input on the board. One wire frames the metal as pressured by a stronger dollar and higher crude, which the tape has not confirmed.
iron ore๐Ÿ”ด DOWNโ€”AUDNo price feed; the news has iron ore hovering at a multi-month low on subdued demand and rising supply. That is the direct contradiction to copper and it caps the Australian dollar's upside.
natural gas๐ŸŸข UPUSD, CADEUR, GBP, JPY, CHFUS natural gas at 3.138 is up 3.39% over five days and 10.84% over twenty, at 64% of its range, keeping the energy-cost drag on importers alive. The ECB's Lane argues demand destruction is muting the energy pass-through to inflation.

EUR๐Ÿ”ด DOWNโ—โ—โ—‹Not available: FRED returned a 502 on ECBDFR todayNot in feed; late October ECB: โžก๏ธ hold (likely)as pricedFrance dominates. Euro-zone ministers told Paris to pass the 2027 budget to calm markets, euro-area yields stayed elevated while Treasury yields retreated, student protests spread and diesel reserves are being released.
AUD๐ŸŸข UPโ—โ—โ—‹4.35%Not in feed; November RBA: โžก๏ธ hold (likely)more hawkish than pricedThe China inputs are split: copper is up 2.48% over five days while iron ore hovers at a multi-month low on subdued demand and rising supply.
JPY๐ŸŸข UPโ—โ—‹โ—‹0.98%Not in feed; late October BOJ. Ueda is invited to speak at the IMF on 6 November: โžก๏ธ hold (leaning)more hawkish than pricedIntervention risk at 158: the wires describe dollar-yen stuck directionless around 158 caught between rate differentials and intervention concerns, and the August current account surplus exceeded 4 trillion yen, up 12%.
CHF๐ŸŸข UPโ—โ—‹โ—‹-0.05% (3M interbank)Not in feed; December quarterly assessment: โžก๏ธ hold (likely)as pricedFrench sovereign stress is the whole flow story: Barron's frames France's debt woes as a trigger for broader euro-zone trouble, the ECB is wary of stepping into the bond turmoil, and protests are spreading.
USDโšช FLATโ—โ—‹โ—‹3.75%Not in feed; late October FOMC. The only Fed events in the window were the minutes on Oct 7 18:00Z and Waller on Oct 8 08:30Z: โžก๏ธ hold (likely)as pricedLong-end supply and tariff anxiety have been the dollar's bid; both faded this week as yields retreated from 24-year highs and the wires explicitly tie dollar softness to weaker yields.
GBPโšช FLATโ—โ—‹โ—‹3.73%Not in feed; November MPC: โžก๏ธ hold (leaning)as pricedPositioning is the story. Specs are net short 91,075 contracts, 36.2% of open interest, after adding 8,507 shorts, an extreme that makes sterling asymmetric to any good news.
CADโšช FLATโ—โ—‹โ—‹2.25%Not in feed; BoC decision expected in October. Today's Employment Change and Unemployment Rate at 12:30Z are the decisive data: โžก๏ธ hold (likely)more dovish than pricedOil cuts both ways today: the loonie gained on the oil rally and a narrower yield gap, but WTI then fell 1.36% once Trump ruled out an Iran attack before the midterms.

View is against the basket of the other six over 2-5 days; conviction is The desk's own, 1 to 3. Scored at 3 trading days.

Closing note

One lean today, AUD/CHF long, and no new dollar or Canada risk. The 12:30Z Canadian employment report decides trade #30: a soft print against the +6.1K forecast with unemployment at 6.5% keeps the dovish Bank of Canada path and rescues the position, a clean beat ends it at 1.419 and takes AUD/CAD off my idea list. At 14:00Z, UoM inflation expectations above the prior 4.6% would put the Fed path back in play and revive the dollar just as yields have stopped supporting it. What would change my mind on the euro shorts: a credible French budget path, which would squeeze a crowded net short of 63,256 contracts and hit #29 and #32 together. On the yen, I respect the 158 zone in both directions; the intervention watch is why #33's stop sits above the 20-day high rather than inside the range.
