Tue, Oct 13, 2026. Day size: โผ๏ธ big (upgraded: trade booked, board changed).
Entry 1.10140 ยท target 1.11150 ยท stop 1.09750 ยท reward 2.6ร risk ยท spot 1.10137
This is the widest two-way policy gap on the board that does not route through tomorrow's US CPI: Greene says waiting for second-round inflation effects would be too late and that IMF forecasts show UK policy is not very restrictive, with the IMF putting UK growth above expectations and inflation second-highest in the G7, while the Swiss three-month rate is already negative at -0.045% and still falling, and FXStreet attributes the franc's drop directly to a dovish SNB. I prefer this to the obvious GBP/USD or EUR/GBP expression because the dollar is a CPI coin flip at 93% of its 20-day range and my EUR/GBP short is already on the book. Positioning amplifies: specs are net short 97,611 sterling contracts, 36.7% of open interest, the most extreme short on the board, against a franc short of only 17.3%. The stop sits below the 8 October low of 1.09822; invalidation is a soft UK GDP print on 15 October, forecast -0.1% m/m, or Schlegel on 15 October refusing the dovish label.
Entry 176.900 ยท target 175.350 ยท stop 177.900 ยท reward 1.6ร risk ยท spot 176.906
The euro is last on the five-day basket at -0.50% while the yen is only -0.14%, and the euro's own story is stasis: the deposit rate pinned at 2.50%, Moulin flagging the Bank of France uncertainty gauge at its highest since April and Patsalides saying policy has limits against inflation shocks. On the other side the IMF expects the BoJ to hike gradually toward neutral, US 10Y yields have slipped to 5.22% from 5.28%, and the yen firmed even after softer producer prices. I take this rather than USD/JPY, where my short is already open and CPI is the binary, and rather than EUR/USD for the same CPI reason. EUR/JPY at 176.906 sits at 13% of its 20-day range below both the 20- and 50-day averages, so structure agrees; the stop is above the 8 October high of 177.861, and crowded specs, net long 62,325 yen and net short 99,332 euro, are the squeeze risk that keeps this small. Invalidation is a dovish Lagarde failing to weaken the euro plus a rebound in US yields.

โช Neutral (mild). Helps JPY, CHF; hurts AUD.
VIX 15.21 is up 2.49% on the day but down 11.05% over 20 days and sits at 23% of its 20-day range, and the S&P 500 at 7807 is at 89% of its range, barely changed. Against that, Asian equities were sold heavily with the Kospi down 7% and Asian stocks battered by geopolitical tension. AUD/JPY at 110.207 is up 0.23% on the day but only 38% of its 20-day range, and gold is up 0.62% to 4216.6 while still 36% of range: stress is regional, not systemic.
| Commodity | Direction | Helps | Hurts | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| oil | ๐ข UP | CAD | JPY, EUR, CHF | WTI 92.81 is up 3.77% and Brent 105.75 up 5.14% over five days, Brent at 75% of its 20-day range, though both fell about 1% today. The pullback is supply news: Saudi Arabia pledged to keep exports flowing after the Houthi airport attacks and Russia flagged more diesel exports. |
| gold | โช FLAT | CHF | USD | Gold 4216.6 is up 0.62% on the day and 0.70% over five days but down 2.68% over 20 and at 36% of its range. FXStreet calls it a range play amid geopolitics ahead of the US inflation test; Reuters ties the tick up to easing oil. |
| copper | ๐ข UP | AUD | USD | Copper 6.765 is up 0.99% on the day, 2.58% over five days and 6.22% over 20, at 86% of its 20-day range. That is the strongest sustained industrial-metal bid on the board and the cleanest commodity support for the Australian dollar. |
| iron ore | ๐ด DOWN | โ | AUD | No price feed; the news reads soft: iron ore dips as ample supply and declining freight rates weigh. It is the one commodity leg working against the Aussie while copper works for it. |
| natural gas | ๐ข UP | USD, CAD | EUR, JPY, CHF | US natural gas 3.174 is up 1.93% over five days and 8.74% over 20, at 71% of its range. Goldman sees a European reserve release cutting diesel by $11 but shrugs off Russian supply, so the European energy-cost relief is partial. |
| natural gas | ๐ข UP | USD | EUR | Duplicate guard: the single natural gas read is the one above, 3.174 and up 8.74% over 20 days at 71% of range. |
| Currency | View | Conviction | Rate now | Next meeting | Path vs priced | Non-rate factor |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| EUR | ๐ด DOWN | โโโ | 2.50% ECB deposit rate, unchanged [Source: Central bank and macro data (FRED)] | Not in feed; late October ECB. Lagarde speaks twice on 14 October, 02:10Z and 08:30Z [Source: Economic calendar]: โก๏ธ hold (likely) | as priced | French sovereign risk remains the swing factor, with ING framing the franc's outlook around French spread moves and commentary insisting the ECB cannot let France off the hook. Specs are net short 99,332 contracts, 11.4% of open interest, after a 36,076 weekly build. |
| GBP | ๐ข UP | โโโ | Not in feed: the FRED UK policy rate series failed today with a 502 error [Source: Central bank and macro data (FRED)] | Not in feed; November MPC. Bailey speaks 14, 15, 16 and 17 October [Source: Economic calendar]: โฌ๏ธ hike (leaning) | more hawkish than priced | Positioning is the amplifier: specs are net short 97,611 contracts, 36.7% of open interest, the most extreme short on the board. |
| AUD | ๐ข UP | โโโ | 4.35% on FRED as of August; the RBA's September minutes show a unanimous 25bp hike to 4.60% [Source: Central bank and macro data (FRED)] [Source: News AUD] | Not in feed; November RBA. Employment Change, forecast 19.6K, and the Unemployment Rate, forecast 4.6%, land 15 October 00:30Z [Source: Economic calendar]: โฌ๏ธ hike (toss up) | more hawkish than priced | Commodities are split: copper is up 2.58% over five days at 86% of its range while iron ore dips on ample supply and falling freight rates. Australian business confidence slipped and Asian equities were sold heavily, which caps the upside. |
| CAD | ๐ด DOWN | โโโ | 2.25%, down from 2.27% [Source: Central bank and macro data (FRED)] | 28 October Bank of Canada, from the news rather than the calendar feed. Macklem speaks 14 October 06:05Z and 16 October 04:15Z [Source: Previous board] [Source: Economic calendar]: โก๏ธ hold (leaning) | more dovish than priced | Oil is the offset and it is two-sided: Brent is up 5.14% over five days on the Saudi attacks, but crude fell over 1% today as Saudi Arabia pledged to keep exports flowing and Russia flagged more diesel. |
| USD | โช FLAT | โโโ | 3.75% effective fed funds, up from 3.63% [Source: Central bank and macro data (FRED)] | Not in feed; late October FOMC. The calendar carries only Fed Chairman Warsh on 16 October 03:30Z [Source: Economic calendar]: โก๏ธ hold (leaning) | as priced | Long-end supply risk: the IMF warns government bond yields could spike disorderly as debt and inflation risks worsen. DXY at 93% of its 20-day range leaves the dollar carrying a lot of good news. |
| JPY | โช FLAT | โโโ | 0.977% Japan immediate rate, easing from 0.978% [Source: Central bank and macro data (FRED)] | 29-30 October BOJ, from the news rather than the calendar feed [Source: Previous board]: โก๏ธ hold (likely) | as priced | Two offsetting pulls: falling US yields and stalling crude paused the dollar buying in Tokyo, while USD/JPY at 158.26 sits at 84% of its 20-day range with the 20-day high at 158.996, inside the zone where intervention talk starts. |
| CHF | โช FLAT | โโโ | -0.045% three-month interbank, drifting lower [Source: Central bank and macro data (FRED)] | Not in feed; December quarterly assessment. Chairman Schlegel speaks 15 October 04:30Z [Source: Economic calendar]: โก๏ธ hold (likely) | more dovish than priced | The franc is a pure flow currency here: it firmed as DXY pulled back from an 18-month high, and ING sees a mixed outlook against the euro tied to French spread moves. |
View is against the basket of the other six over 2-5 days; conviction is The desk's own, 1 to 3. Scored at 3 trading days.
| Impact | Ccy | Headline | Pushes | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ๐ธ medium | AUD | RBA September minutes: unanimous 25bp hike to 4.60%, hawkish stance maintained; weaker growth must be accepted to defeat inflation | AUD up โ EUR/AUD down, AUD/CAD up | This confirms the only outright tightening path on the board and moves the Australian path from hold to hike-leaning into Thursday's labour data. |
| ๐ธ medium | GBP | BoE's Greene warns waiting for second-round inflation effects would be too late; IMF shows UK policy not very restrictive and second-highest G7 inflation | GBP up โ GBP/CHF up, EUR/GBP down | A sitting MPC member arguing for quick hikes against the most extreme short in the futures data is a path the market has not priced. |
| ๐ธ medium | CAD | Oil retreats over 1% as Saudi Arabia pledges to keep exports flowing and Russia flags more diesel exports | CAD down โ GBP/CAD up, AUD/CAD up | Removes part of the supply premium that had been offsetting a falling Bank of Canada policy rate; Brent at 75% of its range means the offset is reduced, not gone. |
| ๐ธ medium | USD | Asian stocks battered as geopolitical tensions sap risk appetite, Kospi down 7% | Risk off regionally โ JPY, CHF up; AUD down | Stress is regional, not systemic: VIX at 15.21 is at 23% of its 20-day range and the S&P 500 at 89%, so I keep risk neutral rather than risk-off. |
| โซ๏ธ small | JPY | Producer price growth cools, easing urgency for further BoJ hikes; yen firms anyway | JPY up โ EUR/JPY down | The domestic print is mildly dovish but falling US yields dominated the flow, which is the mechanism that matters for yen crosses this week. |
| โซ๏ธ small | USD | Fed's Hammack: higher rates could be needed to avoid an inflationary mindset taking hold | USD up โ EUR/USD down | Commentary, not a decision, and the 2Y has still slipped to 4.75%; it keeps a hawkish tail alive for tomorrow's CPI without changing the base case of a hold. |
| โซ๏ธ small | CHF | Swiss franc drops as dovish SNB lifts USD/CHF; franc firms again as DXY pulls back from 18-month highs | CHF down โ GBP/CHF up | The franc is trading as a flow currency around a policy rate already below zero, which caps how much it can rally without fresh unconventional steps. |
| โซ๏ธ small | AUD | Iron ore dips as ample supply and declining freight rates weigh | AUD down โ EUR/AUD up | The one commodity leg against the Aussie while copper runs at 86% of its 20-day range; it caps Australian dollar upside rather than reversing it. |
| โซ๏ธ small | USD | IMF warns government bond yields could see a disorderly spike as debt and inflation risks worsen | Yields up โ USD up, risk down | A tail risk, not a path change, but it is the standing bid under the dollar and the reason I am not shorting it into CPI. |

Two trades, both deliberately routed around tomorrow's US CPI: long GBP/CHF on the clearest hawkish-versus-dovish pairing available, and a small EUR/JPY short on the weakest currency of the last five days. Everything on the dollar waits until 12:30Z Wednesday, when 3.6% headline and 2.5% core decide whether the hawkish tail gets priced into a dollar already at 93% of its 20-day range. I change my mind on sterling if Thursday's UK GDP comes in materially below the -0.1% forecast or Bailey undercuts Greene in any of his four appearances; I change my mind on the euro short if Lagarde sounds confident enough to start a squeeze in a 99,332-contract net short. The other live risk is oil: a Saudi response to the Houthi attacks that disrupts actual exports lifts the loonie and hurts both my Canadian-dollar-short exposures on the book.
