This is the widest live path divergence on the board that does not settle on today's US CPI print: the UK immediate rate is grinding up to 3.7313% with Bailey saying companies are focusing on costs, the second-round channel the hawks point at, while October BoJ hike bets are fading and the yen is softening on a cautious rate outlook. I take it against the yen rather than against the franc or the euro because positioning pays twice here: sterling specs are the most crowded short on the board at 97,611 contracts, 36.7% of open interest, while yen specs are net long 62,325, 16.9%, so a hawkish UK repricing forces covering on both legs. Structure agrees without being stretched: 210.10 sits above the 209.22 twenty-day average at 73% of the twenty-day range with ATR of 138 pips, so a 190-pip target over four sessions is one and a half daily ranges, not a lottery ticket. Brent at 106.25 and up 6.04% in five days is a direct import-bill hit for Japan, which adds to the same push. Tomorrow's UK GDP at a forecast -0.1% after +0.4% is the invalidation: a print at or below that, or a Bailey walk-back in his three appearances on the 15th, 16th and 17th, breaks the hawkish framing and the stop below 209.10 takes me out under the twenty-day average.

โช Neutral (mild). Helps AUD, CAD; hurts JPY, CHF.
VIX is 15.27, down 11.22% over twenty days but up 1.73% over five and only at 24% of its 20-day range, while the S&P 500 at 7805 is at 88% of range yet flat over one day and -0.17% over five. AUD/JPY, the risk barometer, is 110.80 and up 0.49% on the day but only +0.15% over twenty days, and gold at 4180.3 is up 0.96% over five days holding firm into the inflation print. Equity futures are mixed with rising oil cited as the drag, which is a market waiting on CPI rather than one taking risk.
| Commodity | Direction | Helps | Hurts | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| oil | ๐ข UP | CAD | JPY, EUR, CHF, GBP | WTI is 94.65, +7.22% over five days, and Brent 106.25 at 79% of its 20-day range, with prices rising on Houthi attacks, Hormuz strikes and a report that Iran is expanding attacks on shipping to hold prices up. This is a supply-shock move, which transfers income to the exporter and raises the import bill everywhere else. |
| gold | โช FLAT | โ | โ | Gold is 4180.3, +0.96% over five days but -4.72% over twenty and only at 26% of its 20-day range, holding firm rather than bidding ahead of US inflation data. No haven demand signal worth trading off. |
| copper | ๐ข UP | AUD | โ | Copper is 6.755, +1.15% on the day, +2.40% over five days and +5.03% over twenty, sitting at 80% of its 20-day range, with China September CPI inflation rising cited as support for the Australian dollar. |
| iron ore | ๐ด DOWN | โ | AUD | No price feed; the news has SGX iron ore at USD 90.72 and futures near a four-year low as supply rises and steel demand shrinks, with BHP cutting 300 jobs at Australian iron ore mines and spot softness narrowing imported ore margins to 8.40 yuan/mt. China's September import rise was pre-holiday restocking, not demand. |
| natural gas | ๐ข UP | USD, CAD | EUR, CHF, JPY, GBP | US natural gas is 3.318, +1.07% on the day, +3.59% over five days and +14.77% over twenty, at 97% of its 20-day range. Lagarde named energy as the main driver of rising euro-area inflation, which makes this a cost shock for the European importers rather than a growth signal. |
| Currency | View | Conviction | Rate now | Next meeting | Path vs priced | Non-rate factor |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GBP | ๐ข UP | โโโ | 3.73% | Not in feed; November MPC. Bailey speaks 15 October 07:30Z, 16 October 02:00Z and 17 October 06:45Z [Source: Economic calendar]: โฌ๏ธ hike (leaning) | more hawkish than priced | Tomorrow's GDP m/m is forecast at -0.1% after +0.4%, the single data point that can break the hawkish framing before Bailey speaks three more times this week. |
| AUD | ๐ข UP | โโโ | 4.35% | Not in feed; November RBA. Employment Change, forecast 19.6K after 39.5K, and the Unemployment Rate, forecast 4.6%, land 15 October 00:30Z [Source: Economic calendar]: โก๏ธ hold (leaning) | more hawkish than priced | The commodity inputs are split: copper is +2.40% over five days at 80% of its range, while iron ore is near a four-year low at USD 90.72 and BHP is cutting 300 jobs at Australian mines. Specs are net short 98,588 contracts, 30.0% of open interest, with the short grown by 35,349 on the week. |
| EUR | ๐ด DOWN | โโโ | 2.50% | Not in feed; late October ECB. Lagarde has spoken twice today, 02:10Z and 08:30Z, and an EU Economic Summit runs 14 and 15 October [Source: Economic calendar]: โก๏ธ hold (likely) | as priced | French fiscal risk: Lagarde signalled no ECB intervention in France's fiscal crisis and said the solution is at home, with the 2027 budget debate and a fourth week of student protests running. |
| JPY | ๐ด DOWN | โโโ | 0.98% | 29-30 October BOJ, from the news and prior board rather than the calendar feed [Source: Previous board]: โก๏ธ hold (leaning) | as priced | Energy: Brent at 106.25 and up 6.04% in five days is a direct import-bill hit for Japan, and the Tokyo session is explicitly watching crude and US yields. Specs are net long 62,325 contracts, 16.9% of open interest, so there is long yen to shake out. |
| CAD | ๐ข UP | โโโ | 2.25% | 28 October Bank of Canada, from the news and prior board rather than the calendar feed. Macklem speaks 14 October 06:05Z and 16 October 04:15Z [Source: Previous board] [Source: Economic calendar]: โก๏ธ hold (leaning) | more dovish than priced | Oil is now the dominant driver and it is one-way: WTI +7.22% over five days, Brent at 79% of its 20-day range, on Houthi and Hormuz supply risk. The offsetting drag is the US trade war, with coverage of tariff damage across Canadian and US businesses. |
| USD | โช FLAT | โโโ | 3.75% | Not in feed; late October FOMC. The calendar carries only Fed Chairman Warsh on 16 October 03:30Z [Source: Economic calendar]: โก๏ธ hold (leaning) | as priced | Long-end supply and term premium: JPMorgan's CEO warns Treasury yields could reach 6%, and T-note futures are flat into the print. |
| CHF | โช FLAT | โโโ | -0.05% | Not in feed; December quarterly assessment. SNB Chairman Schlegel speaks 15 October 04:30Z [Source: Economic calendar]: โก๏ธ hold (likely) | as priced | Pure flow currency. It strengthened on dovish Fed rhetoric and the DXY pullback, and French budget risk is being framed as a franc-supportive spread story, but UOB describes range consolidation against the dollar. |
View is against the basket of the other six over 2-5 days; conviction is The desk's own, 1 to 3. Scored at 3 trading days.
| Impact | Ccy | Headline | Pushes | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ๐ฅ large | CAD | Oil prices rise as Houthi attacks and Hormuz strikes spur supply uncertainty; Iran reported to be expanding attacks on shipping to keep prices high | CAD up, JPY down โ CAD/JPY up, USD/CAD down | A supply shock, not a demand signal: WTI +7.22% and Brent +6.04% over five days transfers income to the exporter and raises the import bill for Japan and Europe. It does nothing dovish to the Bank of Canada but it dominates the loonie's flow. |
| ๐ธ medium | JPY | Yen weakens on cautious BoJ rate outlook as October hike bets fade | JPY down โ GBP/JPY up, AUD/JPY up | The near leg of the differential stops narrowing from the Japanese side while the Fed effective rate rises to 3.75%. With specs net long 62,325 yen contracts there is length to shake out. |
| ๐ธ medium | EUR | Wunsch says the ECB will probably have to hike again but is making no bets; Lagarde says she is not seeing any second-round effects yet | EUR flat to down โ EUR/GBP down | The hawk and the president cancel out, which caps how far the euro path can reprice even with HICP rising to 103.66. Stasis is the euro's story, and stasis loses to currencies with a moving path. |
| ๐ธ medium | AUD | Iron ore futures near a four-year low as supply rises and steel demand shrinks; BHP cuts 300 jobs at Australian mines | AUD down โ AUD/USD down, EUR/AUD up | The commodity inputs for the Australian dollar are split: copper at 80% of its range pulls one way, ore at USD 90.72 the other. It caps the size I will carry in AUD longs ahead of Thursday's jobs print. |
| ๐ธ medium | GBP | Bank of England's Bailey says companies are focusing on costs | GBP up โ GBP/JPY up, EUR/GBP down | This is the second-round-effects channel the MPC hawks have been naming, from the governor himself ahead of three further appearances this week. It keeps the November hike leaning alive against the most crowded short on the board. |
| โซ๏ธ small | USD | Dollar slips on dovish Fed signals ahead of the CPI report; T-note futures little changed into the print | USD down โ USD/CHF down, EUR/USD up | Pre-event positioning rather than a path change: two-year yields are still up at 4.80% and the effective rate is rising. The 12:30Z print, consensus 0.6% headline and 2.5% core, decides whether this survives the session. |
| โซ๏ธ small | EUR | Lagarde signals no ECB intervention in France's fiscal crisis and says the solution is at home | EUR down, CHF up โ EUR/CHF down | Leaves French spread risk uncapped into the 2027 budget debate and a fourth week of student protests. It is a franc-supportive flow story rather than a rate-path story. |

One trade today, and it deliberately avoids the 12:30Z CPI: sterling against the yen on the widest live path gap plus a doubly crowded futures position. The book is already heavy with five positions skewed long AUD, long GBP, short CHF, so I am not stacking more of the same risk on a print day; the new trade partly offsets the yen length in #38, which is my weakest open position. What I am watching: the CPI itself, Australian jobs at 00:30Z Thursday, UK GDP at 06:00Z Thursday and Bailey three more times this week, and Macklem twice. What changes my mind: a UK GDP print at or below -0.1% with Bailey softening kills the sterling leg and I will take GBP/JPY off before the stop; a soft US CPI that drags the ten-year back under 5.10% would strengthen the yen across the board and put both the new trade and the oil-driven CAD ideas on hold. My conviction-2 record is 14% and net negative, which is why this is sized as a normal trade and not a best-of-week.
