๐Ÿ”ด SHORT AUD/JPY โ€” conviction โ—โ—โ—‹ ยท conditions โœ…โœ…โœ…โŒ 3/4 ยท 4d ยท trade #40

Entry 109.730 ยท target 108.450 ยท stop 110.580 ยท reward 1.5ร— risk ยท spot 109.733

Australia lost 39.3K jobs in September against a +19.6K forecast, with the reporting explicit that this slashes the chance of an RBA hike, while BOJ board member Koeda urged the bank not to delay raising rates two weeks before the 29-30 October meeting. That is a released hard print and a sitting board member pushing opposite sides of the same cross, which beats anything I have on the dollar pairs. I take this over AUD/USD because the dollar's reaction function is broken โ€” DXY fell 0.47% on a 3.7% CPI print and four high-impact US releases land at 12:30Z. The non-rate legs agree: iron ore at a two-year low, copper down a third day to 31% of its 20-day range, VIX +10.5% and the Nikkei through 65,000, with the pair at 26% of its 20-day range and below the 110.52 average. Invalidated if equities stabilise and the cross reclaims 110.55, the shelf from Monday and Tuesday's closes.

๐ŸŸข LONG EUR/AUD โ€” conviction โ—โ—‹โ—‹ ยท conditions โœ…โœ…โž–โŒ 2/4 ยท 5d ยท trade #41

Entry 1.61360 ยท target 1.63000 ยท stop 1.60280 ยท reward 1.5ร— risk ยท spot 1.61363

The same Australian leg without the risk-sentiment dependency: if the VIX spike mean-reverts the yen cross stalls, but the jobs miss still sits on the Australian curve. The euro is the right counterweight because its own path is stasis โ€” Knot wants a mildly hawkish stance, Dolenc says less may be needed if markets tighten, Pereira says inflation is not spreading, and the deposit rate is pinned at 2.50% โ€” so this is close to a pure AUD short. Price reclaimed the 1.6040 shelf that capped the last three closes and 1.6308 is the 30 September level. Invalidated below 1.6028; the honest risk is that AUD specs are already net short 30% of open interest after adding 35,349 contracts in a week, so a squeeze is the obvious counter-trade.

Risk sentiment

๐Ÿ”ด Risk-off (clear). Helps JPY, CHF; hurts AUD, CAD.

VIX is up 10.48% on the day and 11.87% on the week to 16.87, at 79% of its 20-day range, with the S&P 500 down 1.11%. The Asia session confirmed it rather than stabilising: SK Hynix -10%, Kospi near -6%, Nikkei through 65,000. AUD/JPY, the cleanest barometer, is -0.73% to 109.733 at 26% of its 20-day range, and gold is +1.28% to 4160.3.

Commodities

CommodityDirectionHelpsHurtsNote
oil๐Ÿ”ด DOWNJPY, EUR, CHF, GBPCADWTI is -0.74% to 94.39 and Brent -1.29% to 104.69 on the day despite a +3.17% five-day WTI gain, with prices sinking on a report the US will ease shadow-fleet sanctions and on IEA release plans. Trump is also publicly predicting the Iran war ends soon and oil plunges, which caps rally attempts even with Hormuz shipping attacks continuing.
gold๐ŸŸข UPCHF, AUDUSDGold rebounded 1.28% to 4160.3 as the dollar and yields fell after the CPI spike, though $4,200 is described as a major hurdle and the metal is still -5.44% over 20 days at 20% of its range.
copper๐Ÿ”ด DOWNโ€”AUDCopper fell for a third day, -0.53% to 6.576 and only 31% of its 20-day range, with the selloff attributed directly to the strong US inflation print.
iron ore๐Ÿ”ด DOWNโ€”AUDIron ore slipped to a two-year low on soft China demand and rising supply, with Rio Tinto posting higher Q3 Pilbara production and the Simandou ramp-up adding tonnes. Imported ore margins in China have been cut to 1.10 yuan/mt on higher premiums and softer spot. There is no price feed; this is the news read.
natural gas๐ŸŸข UPUSD, CADEUR, GBP, JPY, CHFUS natural gas is +2.68% over five days and +12.13% over 20 to 3.253, sitting at 84% of its 20-day range. Lagarde has flagged that the Middle East war has put huge strain on energy, which is the import-cost channel for Europe and Japan.

Macro overview

September US CPI came in hot โ€” headline accelerating to 3.7% against a 3.6% forecast, driven by the energy shock โ€” and the first reaction was textbook: dollar bid, euro to a 17-month low, franc to a 17-month low. The second reaction was the opposite. Treasury yields slid back from the CPI spike, the 10-year sits at 5.190% and is -1.65% over five days, and DXY fell 0.47% on the day to 102.06. EUR/USD is back at 1.1218 from a 1.1114 low, GBP/USD at 1.3240 from 1.3139. The hot print has been absorbed into equities as a rate-hike fear rather than into FX as a dollar bid.

That equity channel is where the damage is. The Asia tech complex broke: SK Hynix -10%, Kospi nearly -6%, Nikkei down over 3,200 yen through 65,000, China stocks led lower by tech. The S&P fell 1.11% and VIX is +10.5% on the day and +11.9% on the week at 16.87, 79% of its 20-day range. Two currency-specific shocks sit on top: Australia lost 39.3K jobs against a +19.6K forecast, cutting RBA hike odds, while BOJ board member Koeda warned the bank should not be overly cautious or delay on rate hikes, and the yen firmed on fresh verbal intervention warnings.

The board's own week was bad: three stops in two hours overnight (AUD/CHF -34, AUD/CAD -67, GBP/CHF -39) and four of five currency calls from 12 October graded wrong or flat. The common error was being long the commodity bloc into a jobs print and a tech rout. The cumulative record says conviction-2 calls run 22% while conviction-3 runs 52%; I am therefore reserving size for the two stories that have hard data behind them today and leaning the rest. US PPI and retail sales land at 12:30Z and are the next binary.

Closing note

The board is as one-sided as it has been this month: a hard Australian jobs miss, both of Australia's commodity legs breaking, a BOJ board member pushing for a hike, and a genuine risk-off session rather than a single red candle. I am expressing that twice through the Australian dollar โ€” once against the yen where risk-off and the policy lean compound, once against the euro where the trade survives a VIX reversal. What would change my mind: the VIX unwinding back under 15 with the S&P recovering, which would take AUD/JPY back through 110.55 and strand the yen leg; or today's 12:30Z PPI and retail sales printing hot enough to finally lift US yields and the dollar together, which would pull the whole complex into a dollar story and make the crosses noise. Macklem on 16 October and Warsh the same day are the next scheduled inputs, and Bailey three times in three days means sterling carries more headline risk than anything else on the board, which is why I left the GBP trade as an idea.
