Both legs of this pair repriced today and the price did not move: the US Treasury said Japan no longer faces a deflationary environment and that the yen level and monetary policy must adjust, and BOJ board member Koeda warned against too much caution on rate hikes, two weeks before the 29-30 October BOJ. Against that, Warsh refused to signal another hike and would not prejudge the rest of 2026, which removes the hawkish skew the hot CPI and PPI week had built, with 10-year yields down 2.71% over five days. USD/JPY sits unchanged at 157.82 and the yen is -0.06% on the basket over five days, so none of it is in the price. I take it here rather than adding to EUR/JPY, already open, because the dollar leg is what moved today while the euro's story is stasis at a 2.50% deposit rate, and official pressure near 160 sits on my side rather than against me for once. Invalidated by a push back above 158.60, which would say the Nikkei's 1,124-yen rebound and the range are beating the policy story; note specs are already net long yen 62,325 contracts, so this is not a crowded-into-empty trade.

Risk sentiment

โšช Neutral (mild). Helps AUD, CAD; hurts JPY, CHF.

The tech rout has stopped: the Nikkei rebounded 1,124 yen by the midday close and the S&P 500 is up 0.33% at 7744, with VIX down 2.43% to 16.46 even though it is still 6.81% above its level five days ago. Havens are not being bid aggressively: gold is up 0.54% on the day but down 5.25% over twenty days at the 31st percentile of its range, and USD/JPY is unchanged at 157.82. AUD/JPY at 109.55, down 0.61%, is the one risk-negative signal, and its driver is the Australian jobs miss rather than global sentiment.

Commodities

CommodityDirectionHelpsHurtsNote
oil๐ŸŸข UPCADJPY, EUR, CHF, GBPWTI is 95.71, up 4.20% over five days, and Brent is 105.26 at the 71st percentile of its twenty-day range, though both slipped today as an IEA stock release and improving supply pushed prices down 2.31% and 0.62%. The level still supports Canada's terms of trade even as the Globe notes the loonie has not captured the gain.
gold๐Ÿ”ด DOWNUSDCHF, AUDGold at 4192.7 is down 5.25% over twenty days and 0.56% over five, sitting at the 31st percentile of its range despite a 0.54% bounce on the bond rally and softer dollar. That is a haven bid fading, not building.
copperโšช FLATAUDโ€”Copper is 6.633, up 1.86% on the day but down 0.15% over five days and up only 0.26% over twenty, mid-range at the 47th percentile. A one-day pop, not a trend, so it offsets rather than reverses the Australian rate story.
iron ore๐Ÿ”ด DOWNโ€”AUDPrices hit a two-year low on China demand concerns before rebounding today on dip buying and improving steel margins, while Rio Tinto reported Q3 production up 2%. Supply is rising into soft demand; the bounce stabilises the Aussie rather than rescuing it.
natural gas๐ŸŸข UPUSD, CADEUR, GBP, JPY, CHFUS natural gas is 3.216, up 10.44% over twenty days and at the 77th percentile of its range, flat over the last five sessions. Lagarde has already flagged the strain the energy picture puts on Europe.

Closing note

One trade today, and it is the pair where both rate paths moved and the price did not. I am watching the 156.40-159.00 USD/JPY range: a close above 158.60 says the Nikkei rebound and the range are beating the Treasury's yen message and I am out. Second watch item is Bailey at 06:45Z Saturday, a weekend event that gives sterling Monday gap risk in a currency where specs are short 36.7% of open interest; that is why the GBP/CHF fade stays an idea. The book is yen-heavy with three positions leaning the same way, so I am adding nothing further on that side until #38 resolves. What would change my mind on the dollar: any Fed speaker putting October back on the table, which would reverse today's bond rally and the whole structure of this trade.
